It's Christmas! I love Christmas - all kinds of fun and celebration. It seems a little extreme to me how typically evangelical sites keep reminding us how "Jesus is the Reason for the Season." (Insert sarcasm here.)I know, I know!
Yet, today I realized why it is that we aught to be reminded continuously why we celebrate this holiday.
I had to find a shepherd's crook for my Cradle Roll Sabbath School. As I searched the aisles of a couple of stores I was shocked. Seriously, have you really LOOKED at the Christmas aisles in the stores you frequent? Have you {seen} what's actually there in front of you? I saw tons of santas, trees, elves, snowmen, etc. What I didn't see a lot of was religious paraphernalia or decorations. A couple of crosses, a star or two, and [1] shelf with a few nativity sets on it.
I'm not sure how I didn't notice this before. It seems I was always so focused on the specific items I wanted or needed that I didn't really notice what was surrounding me. Perhaps it's gotten worse in recent years? I don't know why I noticed it today, but it really makes my heart sad.
In an effort to be true to myself and possibly a little evangelical - PLEASE focus on the real reason we celebrate this season, this year! Focus on Jesus - He is the reason for the season.

I was thinking of this entry last night during the fireworks at Disneyland and was ready to be sorrowful/indignant when I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe you'll be encouraged that they included some carols and that Silent Night was the most beautiful moment of the production, with a single shooting star soaring through the sky at the end of "sleep in heavenly peace". I love Disneyland.
We've found the most beautiful decorations at our local Christian bookstore. Like you said, the stuff in the "regular" stores is so...blase. Our ornament this year (hey, I just figured out our tradition! hehe. We get a new ornament every year to symbolize our year) will probably come from Lifeway because we feel that this has been a year of trials and blessing where we've been watched over at every turn....
Yay! I'm glad you found your tradition.
